    The First Modern Divorce

Somewhere in the Library of Congress is the story of the first modern divorce as we know it today. For those of you unable to travel so far here's the beginning of the rest of the story.

The woman was crying and the lawyer was trying to console her. "There, there, honey, it's only natural you hurt, but getting the car, the house, and alimony payments should comfort you.

What? You say you don't want the car, you don't want the house and you don't want the alimony? You mean you're not only going to leave that husband of yours but you're also going to break your promise to him!

You don't understand what I'm talking about. At your wedding didn't you say to your husband that you were going to take him for better or worse, in sickness or in health, through emotional lows and emotional highs, no matter how smart or dull he ever got?

You see sweetheart, you never said you would stay with him forever, you just promised to take him for everything he's got."
