Conditioned Responses and Fame
Pavlov is a good example of how society makes people famous just to fill in empty spaces in history books. Pavlov became famous for discovering conditioned responses. Pavlov would hit a solid object which made a sound. He would do this while dogs were eating food. The dogs would associate the sound with food. When Pavlov made the same sound when no food was present, the dogs were so conditioned to think of food when hearing that sound that they would start salivating. For this Pavlov became famous.
Big deal. Poor people have been doing the same thing to their kids for thousands of years but never got any credit for it. Poor people knew that they couldn't feed their kids all the time, so they trained the kids to respond to a cooking pot being hit with a spoon. The kid would show up instantly, "Where's food?"
"What do you mean where's food? You just ate!" said the parents.
"How come I don't remember eating?"
"Because you got a bad memory, that's why!"
The kid suspected there was something wrong but couldn't prove it. The kid said, "Alright, I'm going to let this slide till us kid's memory cells evolve to a higher quality."
A couple centuries went by. The parent hit the cooking pot with a spoon, the kid showed up instantly, "Where's food?"
"What do you mean where's food? You just ate!"
"That's five times this week, I just ate. I always go around feeling hungry and my body is skin and bones? How do you explain that and don't tell me I forgot I ate, because now I've got a photographic memory and that centuries old excuse isn't going to work on me anymore."
"It's not you memory that's bad, it's your brain - you don't think!" said the parents. "You've got a lot of saliva in your mouth, right?"
"That's right."
"Saliva shows up only when you put food in your mouth, isn't that so?"
"Well…, that's right."
"You got any food in your mouth?"
"No, I can't say I do and that's why I'm complaining!"
"You just ate! That's why you don't have food in your mouth and that's why your mouth is salivating."
The kid asked, "Why do I feels so hungry all the time? How do you explain that?"
"That's because you swallow your food instead of chewing it properly like you're supposed to." the parents responded.
The kid suspected there was something wrong but couldn't prove it. He said, "I'm going to let this side for a couple more centuries but one of these days us kids are going to figure out what's really going on in this world."
Pavlov used to hang around poor people. He saw the parent hit the cooking pot, he saw the kid show up. "Where's food?"
Pavlov noticed the extra saliva in the kid's mouth, the loss of reality and confusion on the kid's face. Pavlov saw all this and said to himself, "Wow! If I could only train dogs to do this I'd become famous!"
